Due to the art style not being very complex, we wanted a character with a simple, recognizable shape so the player can always identify who they are.
The player character is the new lamplighter, the one who will complete the trials and usher in the light back to the lost civilization. The player will explore the ancient civilization with their lantern and the light-sprite by lighting up sconces and lamps, and interact with other characters through dialogue and dialogue choices. The future will hinge on every choice the player makes.
The Lamplighter is a sentient, faithful and naïve guardian that has no concept of self. They are a nonbinary character, allowing for a greater immersion thanks to a greater ease of emotional projection. The player can project onto the Lamplighter and role-play this character how they choose, but primarily be broken down into 'strong and determined' responses, 'uncertain and fearful' responses, and 'defiant and skeptical' responses. The ultimate role of this character is that of duty and sacrifice, but it is up the the player whether or not they want to reject this.

The light-sprite takes the shape of a fox, but is made out of light. This bright and cheery character is the companion of the lamplighter, who lives at the end of their lantern. While exploring, the Lamplighter can arrive at an area that only Flit can access. The Lamplighter must summon Flit to finish the remaining part of the level. The player will then control Flit to light up all lamps in the labyrinth and unlock the next level.
Whenever the player uses Flit’s ability, such as exploring the labyrinth as Flit or dispelling the shadow moths, Flit’s inner flame will decrease. The player’s screen will go dark as Flit’s inner flame is decreasing. The player must then bring Flit to an open-source of flame, or feed it magical pellets to increase its flame and continue their adventure.
The role of Flit is conscientious to a fault, only ever seeing what they do as good, not realizing that setting the world ablaze does more harm than good for others. They're excitable and loyal, and want to help and have fun, but not very dutiful or careful. They want to do right by people and make people happy, they will never understand how they can hurt people unintentionally sometimes, purely because of their very nature. Flit is the physical representation of the eternal flame that burns because of the lamplighter tradition; Their fates are intertwined. While Flit has the potential to cause terrible destruction, all with a pleasant unassuming smile, they also have the capacity to do great good and restore light to the land. A necessary danger, especially during times of great calamity and restoration.
